Jawahar Kala Kendra is an arts and crafts centre located in the city of Jaipur. The centre is important not because of the nomenclature but its close association with the city of Jaipur itself. The centre was built in the year 1986 and the constuction completed in 1991. The centre was launched by the state government to provide space to the cultural and spiritual values of India and display the rich craft heritage. The centre is dedicated to the late prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru.

The centre has been constructed in a manner so as to reveal the ideology of the ex-prime minister and Maharaja Jai Singh, the founder of Jaipur city. Like Jaipur the structure is built based upon ancient hindu treatise that is Shilpa Shastra. The centre in contemoprary times is also a venue of theatricaland musical performances.

The centre has been made in eight blocks housing museums, theatres, library, arts display room, cafeteria, hostel and studio.The centre is frequently occupied with artists and arts loving people. Many exhibitions and performances by local artists are displayed at the centre. The annual festivals of classical dance and music are held in the centre. The centre hosts many workshops of dance and music.

Jaipur, the pink city was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh II, a Kachhwaha Rajput, who ruled from 1699-1744. Initially his capital was Amber, which lies at a distance of 11kms from Jaipur. He felt the need of shifting his capital city with the increase in population and growing scarcity of water. Jaipur is the first planned city of India and the King took great interest while designing this city of victory. He consulted several books on architecture and architects before making the lay out of Jaipur.

After several battles with Marathas, Jai Singh was keen on the security aspect of the city. Due to this reason, he focused on his scientific and cultural interests to make a brilliant city. Being, a lover of mathematics and science, Jai Singh sought advice from Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, a Brahmin scholar of Bengal, to aid him design the city architecture. Vidyadhar referred the ancient Indian literature on astronomy, books of Ptolemy and Euclid, and discussed the plan with the King.

With a strategic plan, the construction of the city started in 1727. It took around 4 years to complete the major palaces, roads and square. The city was built following the principles of Shilpa Shastra, the Indian Architecture. The city was divided into nine blocks, out of which two consist the state buildings and palaces, whereas the remaining seven blocks were allotted to the public. In order to ensure the security, huge fortification walls were made along with seven strong gates.

According to that time, architecture of the town was very advanced and certainly the best in Indian subcontinent. In 1853, when Prince of Wales visited Jaipur, the whole city was painted in Pink color to welcome him. Still, the neat and broadly laid-out avenues, painted in pink provide a magical charm to the city. Jaipur is rich in its cultural and architectural beauty, which can be traced in the various historical and aesthetic places that reside in the city. Makar Sankranti :
The festival is celebrated on the 14th of January every year. This has now become the festival of kite-flying which does not spare the soaring spirits of anyone in Jaipur. Palace On Wheels Tour

Palace on Wheels is a legendary palace on wheels providing, a weeklong cruise recreating the ambience of the glorious past through the heart of Rajasthan.

Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, Hawa Mahal is an important landmark of the city. It is more of a screen than a palace and was built to facilitate the women of the royal household to watch processions and other activities on the streets below without being observed themselves. The best time to visit Hawa Mahal is during sunrise when the golden rays of the sun make it glow like a gem

Constructed in pink sandstone, Hawa Mahal is intricately carved and bordered with white motives. Motifs and carvings designed on the walls of the Hawa Mahal are proof of the efforts, dedication and skillfulness of the artists of that period.

This five-story, pyramid-shaped structure endorse 953 small peepholes, each with tiny lattice worked (jali) pink windows and arched roofs with hanging cornices. Its façade makes Hawa Mahal look more like a screen than a palace. The uppermost three stories are just a single room thick but at the base are two courtyards. It is a fifty-foot high thin shield, less than a foot in thickness, but has over 900 niches and a mass of semi-octagonal bays, carved sandstone grills.

The interiors of Hawa Mahal are stark and plain with a mass of pillars and passages that lead to the top storey. The main motive behind the making of Hawa Mahal was to enable ladies of the royal household to watch the everyday life and royal processions of the city.

The entrance of Hawa Mahal is beautifully adorned with a stately door that opens into a spacious courtyard. The entrance to Hawa Mahal is from City Palace side. The beautifully carved doors open into the courtyard of Hawa Mahal, surrounded by double storeyed building on three sides. The exotic monument also boost an archeological museum. Only the eastern wing has three more storeys above, which are just a single room thick. No regular stairs to reach the upper floors, but only are ramps.

The best time to view Hawa Mahal is sunrise when it catches the early morning sun and is bathed in its golden light making it glow like a gem. The entrance is on the rear side of this building.

The ornamental facade of this "Palace of Winds" is a prominent landmark in Jaipur. Their five-story structures of sandstone plastered pink encrusted with fine trelliswork and elaborate balconies. Jaipur City Palace Museum

The City Palace of Jaipur is a major tourist attraction in Rajasthan. The City Palace or the main palace is an imposing blend of traditional Rajasthani and Mughal art and architecture. The City Palace complex houses several palatial structures constructed by many legendary rulers. Sawai Jai Singh was resposible for making many edifices within the complex and later on additions in the structure were made by his successors. The city palace is divided into two parts- one houses Sawai Man Singh museum and other is still the residential palace of the former maharaja.

The complex consists an excellent museum, an armoury, sprawling gardens, buildings and several fine halls. The museum of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II has an extensive collection of art, carpets, enamelwares and 15th century weapons.

Other significant attractions within the City Palace complex are the Textile, Art Gallery, Chandra Mahal, Mubarak Mahal, Badal Mahal, Sukh Nivas & Shobha Nivas, Chhavi Nivas & Mukut Mahal, Shri Govind Dev Temple.

Mubark Mahal
Mubark Mahal is an enchanting building inside the City Palace Complex, built by Maharaja Madho Singh in nineteenth century. It has a beautifully carved marble gate with heavy brass doors on either side of this gate. Some other interesting sections in the palace are the Diwan-i-Am or hall of public audiences including decorations and manuscripts in Persian and Sanskrit, the Diwan-i-Khas or hall of private audiences with a marble paved gallery.

Chandra Mahal
The Chandra Mahal, or the Moon Palace is the centre of the palace, which provides a fine view of the gardens and the city. On the fourth floor of the Chandra Mahal is the 'Shobha Nivas' or "Hall of Beauty" with mirror encrusted walls having exquisite blue tiled and mica decoration. The Shobha Nivas and the Sukh Nivas is still occupied by the present Maharaja.

Chhavi Nivas
The fifth floor is the 'Chhavi Nivas' or "Hall of Images", with a polished floor of blue and white painted walls, the maharajas retreat in the rainy season. The sixth floor has rows of double columns with mirrored ceiling through which one can have a magnificent view of the rugged hills.

Mukut Mahal
The uppermost storey is called the 'Mukut Mahal' or the Crown Building. Opposite the Chandra Mahal lies the 'Badal Mahal' and the Govind Devji Temple stands between the Chandra Mahal and the Badal Mahal. In the middle of Chandra Mahal and the Badal Mahal, a very delightful system of fountains is placed.

A perfect amalgamation of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture, The City Palace is situated in the heart of the city. A major section of the palace has been converted into a museum while the royal family still lives in one section. The museum has different sections devoted to different subjects like arms and ammunitions, textile and costume, art gallery alongwith palaces like Mubarak Mahal, Diwan-e-Khas, Chandra Mahal and Diwan-e-Aam.

A delightful blend of Mughal and traditional Rajasthani architecture, the City Palace sprawls over one-seventh of the area in the walled city. It houses the Chandra Mahal, Shri Govind Dev Temple and the City Palace Museum.

In the heart of the old city, the City Palace occupies a large area divided into a series of courtyards, gardens and buildings. The outer wall was built by Sawai Jai Singh, but other additions are more recent, some dating to the start of the 20th century. The palace is a blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. The son of the last Maharaja and his family still live in part of the palace.

Before the palace proper lies the Mubarak Mahal (Welcome Palace), built in late 19th century by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II as a reception center for visiting dignitaries. It now forms part of the Maharaja Sawai Mansingh II Museum and contains a collection of royal costumes and superb shawls including sanganeri block prints, royal shawls. Kashmiri Pashmina (goat's wool) shawls, folk embroideries and Banaras saris.

At the heart of the complex is the seven - tiered Chandra Mahal where erstwhile royal family is still in residence, though only a small part of the apartments are occupied. However, it is only the buildings around Chandra Mahal that are open to the public, and these also form a part of the museum.

Jaipur Govind Devji Temple

This Krishna Temple is highly revered by the erstwhile royal family. The image brought from Vrindavan, is housed within the sanctum of this spire less temple, the patron deity of the royal family is very religiously worshipped by most of the Hindus in the city and near by areas. The image is unveiled seven times daily for 'AARTIES' and BHOGS offered in the silver wares, consisting of sweets mostly. The idols of RADHA KRISHNA are dressed in different styles each time for the 'AARTI' procession where thousands of followers or 'Bhakt' gather around the courtyard for the Darshan (a look connecting them with the divine).

An ancient pilgrimage centre, lying beyond the gardens amidst low hills. Temples, pavilions and holy kunds (natural spring and reservoirs) along with lush landscape make it a delightful spot. The small temple of the sun god, built by Diwan Kriparam on the top of the highest peak is visible from all parts of the city.

The royal temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, Govind Dev Ji temple is situated in the City Palace complex. Well preserved by the erstwhile royal family, the image of the chief deity Govind Deo Ji (Lord Krishna) is said to have been brought from Vrindavan and was installed here by Raja Sawai Jai Singh, the founder of Jaipur. Since then, he has been worshipped as the patron deity of the royal family and occupies the sanctum of this spire less temple. 'Aartis' and 'Bhog' are offered to the deity seven times a day, when the idol is unveiled for the benefit of the devotees who come here to pay their homage to the deities. 'Bhog' mostly consists of sweets and is offered in the huge silver wares. Each time, the idols of Lord Krishna and his eternal beloved Radha are unveiled, they are dressed in different styles for the benefit of the devotees who come here to have a glimpse or 'Darshan' of the deities.

The temple was built in 1890 with the money donated by Raja Man Singh, the famous general of great Mughal emperor Akbar and is set between Chandra Mahal and Badal Mahal to allow the sighting of the deities of the temple from the royal palace itself. Thousands of devotees visit the temple, especially during Janamashtmi, to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna. The seven-storied structure was built in the form of Greek cross at an enormous cost of one crore rupees. It is said that Emperor Akbar donated red sandstone meant for building Red Fort at Agra for construction of the temple. The architectural style in which the temple is built is a pleasing amalgamation of Western, Hindu and Muslim architectural traits.

History Of Jaipur

Jaipur is Located 262 kilometres from Delhi, Jaipur was the first planned city in northern India and was conceived by Maharaja Jai Singh in 1727. Maharaja Jai Singh’s predecessors had enjoyed good relations with the Mughals and he was careful to preserve this alliance. He laid out the city, with its surrounding walls and rectangular blocks according to principles set out in the Shilpa-Shastra, an ancient Hindu essay on architecture and in 1728 built Jantar Mantar, the remarkable observatory that still stands as one of the city’s main attractions.

Amer Fort Jaipur’s true history though dates back to the 12th century when the Kachchwaha clan of Rajputs arrived at the old fort palace of Amer in the Aravalli hills. The Kachchwaha belonged to the Kshatriya, or the warrior caste of Hindus, but they traced their origins back to the sun, via Kusa who was the twin son of the god Rama.

The ousted Kachchwahas people were the Susawat Minas, who became the hereditary loyal guards of what became one of the largest and most valuable treasuries in India. From this base, the Kachchwaha Rajputs, with their brilliant soldiering and knack for lucrative alliances, amassed a fortune. However it was the special relationship the Amer rulers developed with the Mughals that brought them real power, influence and wealth.

Jaipur Amer Fort Arriving in Jaipur through the narrow pass in the hills, you are presented with a view of the Amer fort-palace that conforms to every aspect of how a romantic Rajput fort should appear. Rambling over a rugged hill, reflected in Maota Lake below, it is a magnificent sight. A circle of protective hills surrounds it and snaking up them are crenulated walls punctuated by look-out posts.

Maharaja Man Singh II Not long after this the two rulers who built Amer, Man Singh, a leading general under both Akbar and Jahangir, and Jai Singh I, a military and diplomatic genius brought the house of Amer to its highest point in the Mughal court. On the throne Jai Singh I (aged 11) was soon commanding a Mughal force for Jahangir, which went on to fight the Mughal empire for Shah Jahan and finally succeeded. This then led him to became emperor Aurangzeb’s most prized Rajput commander.

Aurangzeb All this time, the Kachchwaha coffers were filling with prizes, rewards and booty. Three rulers later, Jai Singh II, another child prodigy, came to the throne. The boy quickly impressed the 71-year-old Aurangzeb who awarded him the title ‘Sawai’, meaning one-and-a-quarter. (Even today, the flag flying above the City Palace in Jaipur has an extra, quarter-sized one next to it.) Jai Singh II, having proved his soldiering ability further enriched his coffers and fulfilled his other passions - the arts and sciences. After ascending the throne, he shifted the capital from Amer, studied the architecture of several European cities and drew up plans for constructing a larger and well-planned city. He consulted his best mathematicians, astronomers and the Silpa Sastra, a traditional Hindu architectural treatise before making the blueprint for the new city.

Vidyadhar Bhattacharaya After building close bonds with the Mughals and sure that there could be no danger to his throne, Sawai Jai Singh, envisioned his dream project, the building of Jaipur. The foundation stone was laid by him in 1727 and an eminent architect, Vidyadhar Bhattacharaya, was asked to design the ‘Pink City’. It was a two-in-one compliment as ‘Jai’ means victory and was also the ruler’s first name. That it was later chosen as the capital of Rajasthan formed from the amalgamation of various kingdoms, a tribute to both Jai Singh and Bhattaccharya.

Jaipur Gate, The city is planned in a grid system of seven blocks of buildings with wide straight avenues lined with trees, with the palace set on the north side. Surrounding it are high walls pieced with ten gates. The site of the shops, were chosen after careful planning and they are arranged in nine rectangular city sectors (chokris). Jaipur was the first sizable city in north India to be built from scratch, though the famous pink colour symbolising ‘welcome’, came later when Ram Singh II received the Prince of Wales in 1876. The colour was chosen after several experiments to cut down the intense glare from the reflection of the blazing rays of the sun. To this day, the buildings are uniformly rose pink. After Jai Singh died in 1773, a battle for succession followed and the Marathas and Jats who were making advances in various parts of the country also decided to try their luck and Jaipur lost large chunks of territory with the ruler playing second fiddle to the fast-growing East India Company.

Maharaja Jagat SinghIn 1818, several maharajas of the north-west princely states and Maharaja Jagat Singh of Jaipur, signed a treaty with the British under which they could continue to have control of their states, but would be collectively supervised by the British under a new name, Rajputana.
